Your local general GP surgery provides a wide range of family health services, including:
- Advice on health problems
- Vaccinations
- Examinations and treatment
- Prescriptions for medicines
- Referals to other health services and social services

GP Appointments
If you want to see a doctor, you’ll usually need to make an appointment. If you are registered with a GP surgery, you can phone or alternatively use their online services to book, check or cancel appointments with a GP, nurse, or other healthcare professional. Your surgery should be able to offer you an appointment to see a GP or other healthcare professional quickly if necessary.

Doctors spend an average of 8-10 minutes with each patient. Once you’ve got an appointment, plan ahead to make sure that you cover everything you want to discuss. In some GP surgeries, they may offer consultations online or over the phone.
GP services are available 24 hours a day. Outside normal surgery hours you can still phone the GP surgery, but you’ll usually be directed to an out-of-hours service. Alternatively, you can call NHS 111 (24 hours a day, seven days a week) for urgent medical advice over the telephone.
