HOPE-MOVE – free online Hope Programme for people on waitlists for hip and knee replacement surgery

NHS England SW and Hope 4 The Community CIC were successful in securing new funding to support people with hip and knee pain on waiting lists for care. The HOPE-MOVE (Help Overcome Problems Effectively – Movement and Healthy lifestyle) is 1 of only 10 “Scaling community initiatives in diet and exercise” projects funded by Innovate UK using the Contracts for Innovation mechanism.

HOPE-MOVE will support 2,000 people living with osteoarthritis and chronic pain in hip or knee on waitlist for community musculoskeletal services or surgery to stay active, eat well and manage their mental health. Building on our earlier Hopes project, HOPE-MOVE will expand support to people living with osteoarthritis and chronic pain. It will also explore the use of Artificial Intelligence to personalise support and better meet people’s needs.

The Hope Programme for hip and knee replacement surgery helps people to prepare for surgery, keep well and supports recovery. Topics include movement quality and strengthening; coping with pain, managing fatigue, getting better sleep and focussing on what matters to the person.

There are 8 sessions, which can be completed at a time which is convenient. To access the course a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone is needed. The course is not delivered in a way for people to be on “at the same time”. Like a website, the materials can be worked through each week, at a time that suits the individual. Some people do chunks of 20mins some people do more or less whenever they can find the time.

People can choose to join a group facilitated course if they like to learn with and meet others or a self-guided course if they prefer to learn on their own. The next course starts on Wednesday 15th October. There are 180 free places. Adults from across the South West can self-refer and book onto a course using the following link: BOOK HERE.
