Becoming more active
This page aims to give you information, and signpost you to useful national and local resources to help you maintain a more active lifestyle
The importance of exercise
Exercise can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%.
Research also shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Getting out for a regular walk, digging over an allotment, taking the family to the park- these all count towards your ‘active minutes’.
Adults should aim for 150 minutes (2.5 hours per week); children need to be active for at least 60 minutes every day.
